How to Keep Your Pet Healthy This Winter

Now that winter is settling in, it’s important to take some extra precautions to keep your pet healthy and safe. Here are a few tips:

1. Make sure your pet has plenty of warm shelter and bedding.

2. Keep them well-fed and hydrated; be especially careful with senior pets or pets with health conditions.

3. Keep them groomed and brushed; a healthy coat is important for keeping warm.

4. Make sure they have plenty of exercises, especially if they spend a lot of time inside.

5. Check their paws regularly for ice balls, salt crystals, and other winter hazards.

6. Keep them from licking frozen water fixtures.

7. If they need to be outside for a long time, make sure they have a place in your yard where the grass is not buried under snow piles or caked with salt and ice-melt chemicals. Pet’s paws can get very irritated by these things.

8. If you can walk them only on grass. Salt and chemicals irritate their paws and may lead to infections if they lick it off.

9. If you live in a snowy climate, keep an eye out for ice balls forming between their toes; these can be painful or even become infected. You may need to check your pet’s feet before and after going outside during the winter.

10. If they’re a long-haired breed, keep them brushed and combed to remove tangles that can irritate the skin. Pet combs are especially great for this purpose since they have a small guard that prevents you from cutting the dog’s skin with regular scissors or clippers.
